The Wonderful Garden is a vocal and chamber work composed by Carey Tan at the age of ten. Scored for mezzo-soprano and woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon), the piece features both music and text written by the composer himself. It was selected as one of the key repertoire works for his ALCM diploma at the University of West London.

The work is centered on the theme of an “ideal garden,” portraying a tranquil, free, and imaginative inner world through poetic text and delicate musical language. The overall tempo is marked dotted quarter note equals 60, with the indication “Paradisiacal,” creating a serene and dreamlike atmosphere.

Structurally, the piece exhibits a sectional form with elements of recapitulation. The woodwind ensemble provides a gentle, flowing accompaniment through broken chord textures and lyrical lines. The oboe and clarinet frequently carry melodic development, while the horn and bassoon offer harmonic support, demonstrating a notably mature understanding of chamber writing.

The vocal line is closely aligned with the natural rhythm of the text, showing strong lyricism and singability (pp.4–5). In the middle section, as imagery such as “a mysterious maze draws my gaze” appears, the music turns inward, with reduced dynamics and simplified texture (p.6). The return of thematic material follows, including recurring motives such as “tulips blooming, shining with joy,” reinforcing structural unity.

In the later section (pp.9–11), gradual dynamic growth, expansion of register, and the marking poco accel. (slightly faster) build increasing tension. The work culminates in a climax through repeated emphasis on the line “In this paradise, I am free,” expressing an emotional transformation from calm reflection to inner liberation.

Overall, The Wonderful Garden demonstrates the composer’s early mastery of melodic shaping, the integration of text and music, and a sensitive handling of chamber textures. It stands as a representative early work that combines artistic expression with structural coherence.

The Wonderful Garden
As I wander here and there,
The sun emits a gorgeous flare,
Roses thrive and songbirds sing,
A need not worry about a thing.

A tulip rises,
Beams with glee,
I secured in this
Paradise am free.

As a mysterious maze catches my eye,
I pause to take a picture of the sky,
Beautiful, blue and bustling with clouds,
Which act as the sun's private shrouds.

A tulip rises,
Beams with glee,
I secured in this
Paradise am free.

Gathering now my thoughts together,
I contemplate the perfect weather,
And I realise night will soon draw near,
But know, in this garden, I have nothing to fear.

A tulip rises,
Beams with glee,
I secured in this
Paradise am free
